Picking the Perfect Apple

Since I live in the Apple Capital of the World it's imperative you leave knowing how to pick a crisp apple. Russ and I rented an apartment from a local apple grower, Dave. Dave took us to his orchard and taught us how to pick 'em.

Dave told us to look at the calyx (bottom) end of the apple. That's right. See how this one is closed up tight? That's what you look for, a sealed bottom. You'll be horrified when you go to the store and see all the bottoms with gaping holes, and you'll be dissapointed when you bite into one of those babies because it'll taste like mush, YUCK! Just think, now you can pick apples with confidence and I bet you even feel a bit of pride as you sift through the selection that you know how. Go ahead, smile, you know you want to.

Slice it up with a knife or find yourself one of these cool contraptions.
